Performance Counter Problem

Post by M@ster »

Hi,
I have a problem checking performance counter on a Windows 2000 SP4 Server.
I want to check the amount of connected User who use Outlook Web Access (Exchange 5.5 SP4).

The Eventlog Error on the remote machine is:
Event ID: 1016
Description:
The data buffer created for "MSExchangeWEB" service on "C:\exchsrvr\bin\ewsperf.lib" library is not aligned on an 8-byte boundry....

Does somebody know how I can solve the problem?
We use HM 3.69d

Regards
René

Its Exchange related problem (some bug in dll), I found just 1 topic on microsoft.public.exchange.admin forum about this problem.

quote from http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=en&lr ... -byte%2522]
According to Q263112, Service pack 4 should have resolved the problem
But.. you already have SP4. So, this information is not useful :-(

Hi Alex,
thx for your answer.
What machine is meant to have SP4 installed? The HM machine or the Exchange Servers?

OK. Here is some further information:

Rebooting the remote machine doesn't help. Only a reboot of the HM machine solves the problem temporarily :(
Setting PerfWorkMode=1 and using the post SP4 dll doesn't change anything.

We need a solution fast.

Error appears in C:\exchsrvr\bin\ewsperf.lib, its not HostMonitor's library. I assume SP4 should be installed on Exchange system.

SP4 is already installed on the server (Windows 2000 and Exchange).

It has to be a problem with the hm :(
When I open the performance counter tool from ms and add some counters it works just fine (from hm to the remote servers).
On most of the performance counter tests we experience problems. Often the test run fine after a reboot of the hm machine. But after some time all go orange.
Trying to get the actual value brings up an error message: Error: The remote Procedure Call failed

What information can I provide for you to fix the problem?

Since performance monitoring works using the microsoft tools, you could set up alerts with the windows performance monitoring tool as work-around.

You are right. But it is only a workaround...

Yes, but troubleshooting is much more relaxed when you have a work-around

I am working on it but I cannot guarantee solution :-(
I am trying to find some document than will explain how this error can be caused by application. For now all documents that I find assert that error is in performance extension DLL (ewsperf.lib in our case). Just for example: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=262335
Actually it looks logical to me because HostMonitor does not allocate any buffers, performance extension DLL does. On the other hand I do not understand how microsoft tool works without errors. It means there are must be some document, I just need to find it (I hope its available for public)

If problem appears because of performance extension DLL, it will not help.
If problem appears because of HostMonitor, it will not help either (because agent use the same code).
If problem somehow related to RPC (and may be to pdh.dll), it should help.
