Hostmon.exe use 100% CPU

Post by step »

Hello,

since today the hostmon.exe takes 100% CPU. I have changed nothing. The first time I restart the HM, everything seemed to be fine again. But after a few minutes, the hostmon.exe took one core of my CPU completely. Within an hour the hm occupied all 4 available cores and so the machine is busy. Restart of the whole machine takes no effect.
The auditting tool just detects one uncritical error. The system performs 9 tests/sec. But if i stop the monitoring, takes the HM continue the same high CPU use.

We use Win2003 Server R2 SP2 and HM 8.64. There is no Firewall or Virus Scanner on the System.

What can I do?

Thank YOU!

Best regards!

Karl, on behalf of Stefan.

What kind of tests do you use? Actions? Do you use ODBC logging?

Among other things, we use actions. ODBC logging is also active. I read other threads before I start this one. So I deactivate the logging without an effect.

I'm just the agent for Stefan. So i don't know the system very well.

Sorry!

Do I have to restart the HM after I have disabled the logging?
Normally - no. But this situation is not normal, so lets try to disable ODBC logging and restart HostMonitor.
So, what exactly test methods and actions do you use? How many test items do you have in use?
If this problem caused by some 3rd party software, you may try to disable NT Event Log, WMI and Performance Counter test items. Also you may try to disable all actions using menu Monitoring -> Disable alerts.
If nothing of this helps, could you send your configuration files to us? We need HML file with tests and all *.LST and *.INI files from HostMonitor directory.

I have everything done as desired. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. In addition, I have tested a backup of the test list of a few days, even without a positive result. An upgrade of Active and Passive-RMAs, and a downgrade of the Host Monitor itself, remained to version 8.60 also unsuccessfully. I'm going to zip the files and email to you.

Thank you!

Looks like problem caused by "Gonis Mail Relay check" test item.
You may disable this test for now while we are trying to find mistake.

Success! I first disabled the entire Gonis folder. The HM is back as before with 9 tests per second and a CPU load of less than one percent.
I have spoken to the customer. Since yesterday the mail server is accepting only mails from certain mail servers. Our server will be probably rejected. The question is, why is this process is paralyzing the whole Host Monitor?

Thanks for your help! Maybe you can find out the cause of the problem.

I wish you a nice weekend.

With best regards,
Karl

There is update that fixes the problem: www.ks-soft.net/download/hm865e.zip
Just unzip the file and replace hostmon.exe module.
