All questions related to installations, configurations and maintenance of Advanced Host Monitor (including additional tools such as RMA for Windows, RMA Manager, Web Servie, RCC).
Hi,
I have the SMTP test configured to run on a RMA every 10min.
The test should try to connect to a named server on port 25.
The named server uses a public DNS-name.
This test works for the most parts, but pretty often(once per every second hour or so) it fails with "Unknown host".
I´m guessing that this means that the RMA running the test can´t resolve the ipaddress for the DNS-name? But that´s strange since this public server is heavily used and if there were public dns issues on that we would definitely know it. Same if port 25 had issues.
So I´m thinking that perhaps the test isn´t getting the result it´s looking for and then replies with Unknown host.
The reason I´m suspecting this is that if I do some changes(in the internal DNS) on the named server this error message goes away.
Is there a way that we can confirm more exactly why this test fails?
Yes, Unknown host means HostMonitor cannot resolve hostname to IP.
Do you have TCP or Ping test related to the same host? Same result?
HostMonitor version? Windows? Service Pack?
Yes, I have a "TCP Connection" test from the same RMA to the same public hostname. It tests the host for port 443.
That test has never failed and it has the same interval.
HostMon version is 11.99. RMA v6.69c.
Windows version, where RMA is, is 2008R2 with SP1.
