All questions related to installations, configurations and maintenance of Advanced Host Monitor (including additional tools such as RMA for Windows, RMA Manager, Web Servie, RCC).
I hope you can help me, I just started running this as a service and am trying to get this setup right.
Note #1: When HostMonitor starts as a service, it uses the system account (as all interactive services). But this account may not have all the necessary permissions, so some tests will not work correctly (UNC test, "disk free space" test for shared drives, "CPU Usage" test for remote machines, etc). If you need these tests, you will need to assign a special user account on the Service page in the Options dialog.
As mentioned above, the HM service is being launched using the local system account. I am logged into the machine as domain admin and I am trying to do a CPU test. The test result is unknown.
So I tried to assign a special user account as mentioned above, but when I select Use Account and try to put a username/password in, I get this error message from HM: Cannot logon as user "NDanger".
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password
And I know that this is a valid username/password.
I also have a Folder/File Availability test which is coming up as Failed, but my guess is that when the CPU test is fixed, the Folder/File test will also be fixed.
Cannot logon as user "NDanger".

And I know that this is a valid username/password.
H'm, "unknown user name or bad password" its answer from the system. May be you type password in wrong case (its case sensitive)? Could you try to retype it? "NDanger" is local or domain user?
I also have a Folder/File Availability test which is coming up as Failed, but my guess is that when the CPU test is fixed, the Folder/File test will also be fixed.
Yes, many tests will fail until HostMonitor will be able to login under specified user account, e.g. Prosess test, Service test, Performance Counter test, UNC tests.
It's just interesting because the UNC test works on the folder without anything in the ConnectAs box.
But testing the same folder fails as a Folder/File Availability test doesn't.
Also, a NetLogon service test works when ConnectAs uses the username and pw above.

Its strange. Are you using exactly the same UNC path for both tests? What attributes has that folder? And what version of HostMonitor do you use?
What about problem with "Logon as" option? Its solved?
Just give the HostMonitor service the right startup account (instead of local system account) and it will work.
It seems HostMonitor does not always correctly login to remote systems when you give it a connect as account. Using the service account will always work (and not giving a connect as user) if the HostMonitor service account exists locally on the remote server. The only disadvantage is that you have to use this account on every remote server.
What account then should I use to start the HM service as? I assume it will need admin rights, correct?
I thought KS-Soft has always suggested using the local system account...
Wait, wait, wait... Initial problem - HostMonitor was not able to login using specified account
So I tried to assign a special user account as mentioned above, but when I select Use Account and try to put a username/password in, I get this error message from HM:
Cannot logon as user "NDanger".

Right? I think all other problems with tests just a result of this problem. So, we should solve this one.
Nick, did you try to retype password? Did you try to provide another account? Any results?
Still can't get this test to work even using an Admin account...though I had no problem getting the same test to work (easily) on a test system where this same version of HM was NOT running as a service, that was the only difference...
I did not yet try Marcus' suggestion from before as I did not want to mess with the local system account unless absolutely necesary...
Just give the HostMonitor service the right startup account (instead of local system account) and it will work.
Hate to say it, but it seems like a coding issue...
Sorry, probbaly my fault as I keep hopping in and out trying different things...
I tried using different logins from the Test Properties window but it didn't work. Then...
I changed the account that the Advance Host Monitor service was using when it starts. (I did this despite warnings about it needing to interact with the desktop). I changed the HM service so that it would log on with my account instead of the Local System account. When I did this, I could not tell if the service was running (tho it said it was under Services), but it seemed like I needed to launch the app in order to get it up on the screen and to see if the test passed. When I did that the title bar on the HM app did NOT say that it was running as a service (!) but my NT Event log test worked.
I then changed it back so the Adv. HM service was loggin in using the Local System account (exactly as it was before) and then the NT Event log test went back to returning a result of Unknown.
Assuming that I have to start HM as a service using my account (or something like it) I don't get the cool icon in the systray and when I launch the icon manually, it doesn't say it is running as a service. Please let me know what I should expect or how to handle this.
Also, does this suggest that there is no way to make this work using the Local System account?
Thanks so much for your patience. (Hope that answers your questions.)

When you launch application, you will see what is doing APPLICATION. To check what is doing SERVICE, you should use logs, reports, or (IMHO the best choice) Web Service.

PLEASE, give me answer to my FIRST post in this topic. For some reason HostMonitor cannot use account that you provided (on Service page in the Options dialog) and we should fix THIS problem. May be you have specified wrong password? Did you try to retype it? Did you try to use another local account (I don't mean "local system" account, just some local account like "administrator")?
Apologies...
Yes, I verified the password.
Yes, I tried a different local account (not Local System account) and it was not the Admin account.
Nothing worked...
