Is there a way I can test whether HM is sending mail out correct? Right now, it looks like the only way to test my mail configuration is to fail a monitor that has an SMTP alert on it. Would be nice to have a "send test e-mail option" somewhere.

You are right. This option will be useful but its not implemented yet.

While you are at it, it would be nice if there was a log of the emails messages that were send out.

While you are at it, it would be nice if there was a log of the emails messages that were send out.
Just enable "Record info about successful actions" option (option located on Advanced Logs page in the Options dialog).
