Server: Windows2003 standard, sp1
Dual 2.8 gig xeon processors
1 gig of RAM
Hostmon: 5.38
No virus scanning software installed
No firewall software installed
Have you upgraded your original hostmon installation several times? - just curious
We were able to fix the issue we had with Hostmon and GDI objects (GDI object count for the Hostmon process would grow to 9,999 within a day). We updated to the latest version, created a new Hostmon.ini file and replaced the RepPList.lst and Palettes.lst from those from a fresh install on another server.
The GDI object count now stays at around 300 (Major victory). Hostmon will now run for a day or so and stops email alerting. When we try to edit a test we get a window that says “cannot create dialog box, system out of resources”. The windows event log shows the following error when we try to edit a test
Event Type: Error
Event Source: hostmon.exe
Event Category: None
Event ID: 0
Date: 8/24/2005
Time: 11:00:48 AM
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( hostmon.exe ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Access violation at address 005DC1C6 in module 'hostmon.exe'. Read of address 00000047.
The hostmon system log reports - SMTP client error: Access violation at address 0044E54C
The Hostmon process was using 305 GDI objects, around 200 user objects and 4,700 handles. The system memory utilization was low (around 450mb total).
Hostmonitor 5.38 doesn´t send notifications anymore
4700 handles definatelly is not normal...The Hostmon process was using 305 GDI objects, around 200 user objects and 4,700 handles. The system memory utilization was low (around 450mb total).
If you restart HostMonitor, Task Manager will show just 100-500 handles allocated by HostMonitor? And then this number constantly grows?
Note: Its normal if this number grows when HostMonitor starts to perform tests. But after a while (when all tests performed once) number should oscillate just a little (e.g. HostMonitor uses around 1000 handles but sometimes this number jumps to 1300 and then go back to 1000 - its normal)
What about Total number of allocated handles on the system? This counter is displayed by Task Manager on Performance page. If HostMonitor holds 4700 and you terminate HostMonitor, will Total Handles counter reduced by 4700?
BTW:
"Generate reports" action provides "Use report pool" option. This option tells HostMonitor that report generation can be deferred for 1-2 seconds. In some cases this option noticeably reduces resource usage, e.g. if you use "Generate reports" action for many test items that can change status at the same time. However you should not use this option if report must be processed immediately; e.g. you are using 2nd action to send reports by e-mail or you are using some script to publish report on your web site.

1) If HostMonitor cannot execute some action, it records information about problem into system log (log file that is specified on Advanced Logging page in the Options dialog). Could you please the log?
2) Could you check NT Event Log? Any errors?
3) Usually people configure actions to send e-mail when test status changes. It means HostMonitor does not send any mails when everything works fine. Do you use different configuration? You have setup HostMonitor to send e-mail every 5 min?
4) Could you check status of the tests without logging in? E.g. using Web Service or HTML reports

Re: emails, you are correct, and I have since added the reg code to the server. However, when I restart the service (with the domain admin account I browsed to so I would not create a typo) it still generates an error in the event log "Cannot logon as the user "xxxxx". Logon failure: Unknown user name or bad password"
Event ID 1002
Source HostMonService
Update: When I create a local admin account and set up the HostMonService to run with that one, I don't get the error
