DNS testing of MX and TXT records

Post by terje »

It seems that Hostmonitor can only test A-records as part of a DNS query. I would like to be able to do more general DNS tests against other types of records.

For instance I would like to check that TXT records for a given domain are:-

1. Present.
2. Equal to a given value.

However it makes sence to expand beyond this and test all sorts of DNS records.

I have added your request into "to do" list. Medium priority

I would love to see you add a MX record test. One that would include the preference level as well. I am very happy to hear that you are going to do something with this in the future!!! This is something I wish your program would do since version 1.0! Keep up the good work!!!!

DNS MX and CNAME records

Post by jdw730 »

Is this still slated to be added? I Would like to be able to do a DNS test and look for CNAMES or MX Records. For Example when you look up a URL, and the response is one of 20 different addresses in a server cluster farm for external addresses that are not capable of having the RMA agent installed. Example I look up www.url.com, and receive one of a large server farm of addresses.

Or if you query a MX Record and instead receive a CNAME record that points to a server farm with dynamic addresses, or a different A record. Example for a company that may use a SMTP service, but if you check for the DNS records, they should always point to clusterfarm.smtp.url.com. For things like MessageLabs, Postini, or even if you have your own SMTP cluster farm where the CNAME stays the same, but the IP addresses change frequently.
