Connection Manager authentication

Hostmonitor 4.40c - running as service
Windows 2000 Server, SP4

Greetings,

I'm attempting to do a file count test on a server. I'm using connection manager to give appropriate credentials. However, I'm consistently getting an "unknown", as HM does not login properly. I've tracked the issue down to the fact that hostmonitor attempts to login with "<username>@<domain>". This will work fine with kerberos authentication (ie: Active Directory), but does not work when I'm attempting to authenticate to an NT domain using NTLM authentication. I tracked this down via the security event log. I'm hoping there is some configuration I'm missing that will fix this.

Thanks,

Victor Fisher

This is the failed attempt (server in question is not in AD)

Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: <username>@<domain>
Domain:
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package: NTLM
Workstation Name: ws1

This is a good attempt (server here is in AD):

Successful Network Logon:
User Name: <username>
Domain: <domain>
Logon ID: (0x0,0xDDE15F)
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: Kerberos
Authentication Package: Kerberos
Workstation Name: ws1

What account you have specified on Service page in the Options dialog? "Local system account"? You should provide some power user account or better administrator's account there.

That did the trick, thanks... but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the connection manager? I should be able to use an account that only has administrative privledges to the machine to be monitored.

Maybe I'm missing something, I dunno.

Don't get me wrong, I love hostmonitor. Great product.

Thanks again.

Connection Manager is responsible for connections to REMOTE systems (you may use different accounts for different systems). Setting that is specified on Service page defines account that is used to run HostMonitor on LOCAL system. If HostMonitor is running under "local system" account, it does not have rights to use network functions.
