Problem connecting remotely to outside domain

Post by cdavis »

I have a problem performing cpu utilization and NT log check requests to my servers located at a secondary location. I am using Host Monitor ver. 3.71 running as a service on my XP sp1 system. The servers I am trying to get tests from are running Win2k sp4 and while UNC disk space checks work fine on those outside servers, NT log checks using a logon covention of domain\user is unable to connect and defaults to my local machine. The cpu tests work fine on our internal network, but again are unable to get tests from the outside servers. All servers have SNMP service running. Any ideas? (Other than upgrading and getting RMA  )

CPU Usage test does not use SNMP protocol, instead it needs access to Performance Counters. It means Remote Registry service should be started on remote systems.
Also it needs administrator privileges. It means you should specify administrators account on Service page in the Options dialog. If you check system that located in different domain, that domain should trust your domain.

Thanks for the help Alex! While I am still unable to get cpu tests, I am a little closer. With the information you gave me I am able to get a cpu test from the domain controller at the secondary location, however the other servers in that domain still come up as unknown. Here are the changes and tests I made:

-changed the logon info on HostMon service to reflect admin logon and password (on my local machine)

-added admin logon to the Remote Registry Service (on test server)

-added trust delegation to the test server at secondary locale

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

So, you are able to get CPU info from domain controller (that controls some another, not your domain) but you are not able to retrieve information from servers/workstations that located in that domain?
It doesn't look like authentication problem to me. Remote Registry service is started on that system. Right? And its Windows 2000 system? BTW Remote Registry service should run under "Local System" account (but probably administrator's account is good as well).

Since W2K, credentials are handled slightly different. It means you must have a local account with sufficient rights if the target machine is not in the same domain and you use a local account to connect to the remote machine. Just recreate the account HM uses on every target machine outside your domain.

Perhaps starting HM with a domain account could solve this (when a trust exist), but I have never tried that option.
