TELNET MAIL

I am trying to send mail using telnet and a fake email address. This is not to damage but a neat little trick I am trying to learn more about. I went through the helo, mail from:,rcpt to:,data, and quit commands but it never seems to work. Is this outdated or am I just using the wrong domains.
P.S. Yes of course I put the "." on a line by itself and used port 25. Any help is appreciated. And yes I am very much a newbie.

As I understand you use fake address of the sender? Now many SMTP servers check address of the sender and do not process mails with incorrect address.
