Show counters for event log errors or warnings

Post by meppyman »

I am wondering if it is possible or will ever be possible for HM to show a count value for NT Event Log tests. For example, the number of System Event Log Errors in the last 24 hours. I may just want the test to show "bad" if there are more than 1 error but not do anything about it (no emails or notifications). Then the person monitoring can review the count once a day and just acknowledge it or take action as needed. A seperate test might warn if there are too many NT event log errors in a set time period (e.g. 60 minutes as per another post).

Perhaps reporting does what I need, I am still to get to that part of the product. But if there was a way to show a "dashboard" for a server or set of systems that showed the performance or health in an easy to read way that would be something very handy.

I will probably stop posting questions like this after this one, as I really need to read the manual fully and spend more time learning the system :)

Actually all your questions fit "Configuration, Maintenance, Troubleshooting" forum :)

I saw that post it is the one I hinted at above, but I was thinking more along the lines of a performance screen for a server that shows a summary of specific counters and measurements, along the lines of the monitoring emails that you get from SBS servers once a day... perhaps this is an idea for an extra module or application to add, or perhaps its a direction you don't want to go...

I just have this picture in my mind of my baby NOC with a few screens, one of them being the default Host Monitor screen showing the folder tree and logs mostly, but then other screens with performance information that is not about alerts, more about being able to see a snapshot of the performance of a server or network or whatever.

Like I said it's just an idea and not fully formed yet, I like HM a lot but I feel like there could be some additional ways of looking at the information that could be useful? For example the web view you get from a mobile device is quite nifty, but is not replicated in the application.

I did a mock up of something a little while ago in Excel, it had 3D bar charts for all sorts of things like disk space, event log errors, Exchange store size. They would have different colours depending on whether they were in OK, warning or critical state and had numbers on them. The idea was to make very easy to see an overview of the server's health and performance each day/hour, etc.

Perhaps there might be a way to do a custom report that generates the same kind of view and have it as a web page that gets updated by the hour on a screen or something? I really like presenting information in easy to read and understand ways.

Then the next version I was going to do was the ability to drill down but double clicking on each graph or even a bar and see the details (e.g. System event log error list, etc).

Pie in the sky wish list stuff, and probably describing a totally different application, but I can't help but feel there would be a way to add this to HM, either as a feature or an addon.

Well, we have similar ideas, probably it will be implemented as another application. Probably not very soon. May be in version 9 or 10.

Web view? Which one? The one that is displayed by http://webhost/compact.htm URL?

Well, we are going in this way... Version 8.24 offers historical charts and SLA report: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/news.htm#v824

I see this picture in my dreams as well :) Probably one day it will be possible.
BTW: Log Analyzer allows you to zoom in charts
