Minor annoyances. . .

Post by greyhat64 »

Unsorted lists
Whether it's the user defined variables or mail profiles. You have a sort button on the Action profiles, so I know someone has taken notice of this issue, at least to some degree. There are probably others that desire the same attention.
Test Name
I've yet to find where I can define what the default Test Name should be? I end up editting this field every time to be "HostName: {Primary Test Parameter}".
For instance: Server1: MSSQLServer" if it's a service test.
Which is also why I pushed so hard for a common Host field across all test methods. For that matter, most tests can be defined as Host, Test method, Method required parameter, Optional parameters.

I then set my console view and reports to reflect (first column:)Test Name, (second column:)Test Method, and so on. It's the most logical way for me to view tests.

Where exactly do you want to see such option?

You cannot specify template yet. We plan such option in future versions.

I gave you an example for flat lists (your Action profiles dialog has a [Sort] button).
I suggest you take an inventory of all list boxes, tabular lists, etc. and apply the appropriate standard sorting method for each list type - i.e. click on a column header in a tabular list to sort (ascending/descending) on that column.

Soon I hope. :)

You could accomplish this, and more:: (hold onto your hat, I'm thinking on the fly again)
A bit bigger project, but a more flexible approach: Already a folder is more than just a container. You provide regional support, custom reporting, comment variables, etc.
How about including a list of valid HostNames/IP's as part of the folder properties?
  • This list of HostNames would be presented for any Add/Copy of a test into that folder
    • The necessary Host and IP address fields would be populated according to the requirements of the test method.
Of course that dialog box would include the option to add new HostNames to that list.
  • You might even be able to apply inheritance for subfolders  (Don't get too caught up in this thought)
  • The Test Name could then be generated during the Add/Copy using a template that borrows from that same list.
  • A 'list' of one would accomplish what I do in defining a folder per host, and yet allow others to use folders to define regions, facilities, departments, etc.
    • This folder oriented host list could be generated by the upcoming Device Discovery tool, even as it creates the initial test(s) per host. :D
It could also be used for that future Mapping project.
See - I do have a purpose for every request I submit, and I can connect the dots between them :P
I hope this doesn't sound too pushy but, as you can tell, I'm a very OOP thinker. I'm unwilling (nor do I have the time) to reinvent the wheel when you guys already have such an awesome product, but I'm cursed to see everything from the perspective of my own Rose colored glasses.

Every object has it's function(s), every function has it's parameters, every parameter has it's purpose.
Reuse and recycle!

We did this a while ago and make some lists sorted. I am not sure all lists need such option.
However we plan to add such option for Global Macro Variables.

Regarding folder as container for templates - yes, we thought about this as well. Folder may keep list of various variables that can be used as parameters of test items. Network discovery tool may take some folder(s) as source for replication and create clones using different values for these variables.

My list of Global macro variables have grown by leaps and bounds, hence I bring this back up.
When I'm editting/inserting entries in the list I'd like to sort that list by either column (Variable name, or Value). A simple click of the column to execute the sort would be nice.
As for editting Action profiles and picking gmv's, sorting by variable name would suffice.

I think we implement this in next version of HostMonitor (7.70)
