"Generate Reports every..." seems to be flaky

Post by daseymour »

We are having problems with HM routinely generating reports.
In our setup, we have two folders under Root in HM with separate reports in each (using "folder's own report settings" option). We also have reports in the Root folder.
For all of these reports, we have the option turned on to "Generate Reports every 1 min". However, the only one that works is Root, and even it doesn't work every time. If we hit "Generate Reports now" under each folder, the reports are generated properly.
A few days ago, we experienced the same trouble using global Reports (under the "Options" menu). If we kept on turning the reporting off and then back on, HM would eventually start to generate the reports automatically. However, after the machine rebooted, the reports were no longer automatically generating.
We also tried setting up a Test to run every 1 minute using the "Generate Reports" action on a 'good' status. However, the same problem occurred here as well (only Root would work once in a while).
Yesterday, after continuous setting and resetting, we finally got HM generating the reports routinely. This stopped, however, after we rebooted our machine this morning.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

OS: Windows 2000 Server
HM Version: 5.82
RMA Version: 3.20

Thanks,
- Derek

1) You are using registered or evaluation version?
2) You are using local or network drive to store report files?
3) Could you check system log file (specified on Advanced Logs page in the Options dialog)? Any errors?
4) If you are using registered version and you do not see any errors in log file, please send your setting to support@ks-soft.net We need HML file with tests, hostmon.ini and all *.LST files

1. Registered version
2. The reports are going to a network drive
3. Ah... numerous entries of "Report creation error: Cannot create file "\\Server\Folder\Report.html".

Is there any way I can get details on why the file could not be created? If I click on "Generate Reports Now", I don't seem to get this error.

Thanks!

I assume service is started in service mode?
And you are starting another instance in application mode to click on "Generate reports now" button?

I believe we are running it locally and not as a service (I will verify that). Either way, I'm only using RCC to click on "Generate Reports now".

In such case you don't need RCC at all.

Sounds like you are using different accounts to start HostMonitor and RCC. "RCC" account has rights to access network resource, "HostMonitor" account does not have such rights.

I am using RCC because I'm on a different machine. However, we resolved the issue. When we ran HostMonitor as a service, we were getting the error (which turned out to be a permissions issue). After we rebooted the server, another person was starting HM locally, giving it permissions to generate the reports. This explains why it seemed to be flaky.

So, I assume that the "Generate Reports now" button uses the current client (like RCC) instead of the HM service? That would explain why it worked everytime.

Thanks, Alex.

Depends. If you start service and click that button using service's GUI, service will generate reports. If you start application and click the button, application will generate reports. If you start RCC and click the button, RCC will generate reports.
