Certain Tests Hang

Post by CliveAllen »

Advanced HostMonitor v5.66
OS: Windows 2003 SP1
Hardware: Pent IIII 3.0Ghz, 1GB Memeory (HP Proliant Server)

We have certain test which seem to hangup for an unknow reason e.g. CPU, Memory, Service Checks. The checks are performed against servers on different networks and the checks that hang vary.

Some checks just take a very long time e.g. CPU and some report back that the operation timed out e.g. Memory. However another test against the same machine works without any problems e.g. UNC Test

I have run the Estimate Load and the Load is 1 test/sec and it says the system is able to perform given tests without significant load. I see no high CPU usage and Host Monitor seems use about 57MB of memory. It does not help to stop and then start HostMonitor again.

What is causing this and how can we solve this?

Many Thanks

If test stays in "Checking..." state for a long time, usually it means Windows does not receive responce from remote system. Could be communication problem, slow connection, malfunctioning router, too high network traffic, too busy remote system.
If you are checking remote networks, I would recommend to install RMA in that networks. http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rma-win/index.htm

Recently has faced a problem when HM gave out on a number of tests the message "Unknown". Also if during the moment of delivery of the message to try to be connected to the machine on UNC, Windows report about error " The network name cannot be found ". The description of a mistake and the decision in here.

The issue occurs because of contention for the NetBT user mode DNS resolver. This resolver can only resolve names serially.
Interesting. Thanks for information

I don't think the network is the problem here as other tests against the same server work fine and the majority of the test go over the local network.

Looks like the only way to find the truth - use sniffer (network packets analyzer)
