ODBC Query test

Post by vidyagana »

Hi:

I have setup 2 tests as described below:

1. First test is a shell script test which runs an Oracle script and updates a table.
2. Second test is an ODBC query test which runs the foll query
select <columnname> from <tablename>
and selected "Alert when value in row 1 and column 1 is = 0"
But when I do a "Test" I am getting the foll error
Error: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specifie

I have created a ODBC Data source that points to the Oracle database and I am able to successfully test the source from within "Microsoft ODBC administrator". What is the problem here?

Thanks,
Vidya.

Windows offers System and User data sources. Option located on Misc page tells what name space should be used by HostMoitor.
We recommend to use System DSN, otherwise HostMonitor will not be able to perform test in service mode.

Hi:

I have created a data source under system dsn only, is it a must to specify the name space in the option on misc page?

Thanks,
Vidya.

At least you should check what DSN is used by HostMonitor

I checked in the settings and HostMonitor is using "System DSN".

So, now you should be able to select correct DSN using Data source dropdown in Test Properties window or in ODBC SQL test window.

The dropdown is coming back empty. There is nothing to select in the dropdown.

What account do you use to start Hostmonitor? We recommend to use admin account. HostMonitor is started as service or as application? Test is performed by HostMonitor itself or by RMA?

As of now, HostMonitor is running as an application, I have not installed the service. The test is being performed by HostMonitor itself.

What OS is installed on your system? Could you try ODBC Datasourse Administrator (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC))? Have you created ODBC Data Source on machine, where HostMonitor is running, I suppose?

Windows 2003 is installed on the server and I have created a data source through ODBC Datasourse Administrator and when I test the connection from there, it works fine.

Very strange, we have never had any problems with ODBC datasource pupulation. What version of HostMonitor do you use? Version 6.08 might lead to similar problems. We recommend to use version 6.10 instead. Are you sure you have created System DSN (ODBC Datasourse Administrator > System DSN tab)? There are no any security settings concerning ODBC, so if you are able to run ODBC Datasourse Administrator on host, where HostMonitor is running, than HostMonitor is able to populate ODBC source into dropdown.

One correction. The OS is not Windows 2003, it is Windows 64-bit.

Strange problem
Do you see data sources in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\ODBC Data Sources ?

Please let me know if I have to do something differently for Windows 64 bit.
I am also having another problem. Initially I was running Hostmonitor as an application on this server and I tried to install the service. The service got installed fine but when I started the service, I am not seeing the HostMonitor icon. Is this also because the OS is 64 bit?

Thanks,
Vidya.
