Any way to monitor end-to-end bandwidth available?

Post by amolsawarkar »

We have may sites connected over Internet backbone. We would like to measure bandwidth available upto other end at any given time. One option is to use Linux based smokeping. But would like to...
1. Integrate monitoring results in existing hostmonitor.
2. Avoid maintaining additional server just for monitoring few sites bandwidth.

Please guide any solution working with HM5

What about ping test? Of course it does not display bandwidth but reply time is reverse side of bandwidth.

Thank you,

You are right. However, That can not give me exact idea of bandwidth. we have certain applications at Head office here used by users all over world. some places users complain about availability of bandwidth. We know their bandwidth to ISP is sufficient. But would like to measure BW available upto Head office limited by any means en route. Latency time is another factor which may be measured using ping test.

Any view ?

Sorry, there is no in-box solution.
Probably we can implement new test using RMA<->HostMonitor communication for monitoring...
Or may be you can start Echo server on remote system and use some freeware utility?

Thank you very much. I apreciate you take customer need in account for further development.

Can you explain how to make use of third party tools to integrate with HM5. I know we can make use of vb script as well as command line scripts. But since I am not developer, I will need some more help. We use only Windows platforms.

If you have some command line utility that measures bandwidth and provides result on standard output, it can be used in Shell Script test method. But you may come across some problems, e.g. utility displays too much unnecessary information, in this case you will need another script to filter output...
Probably its better to create such utility specially for HostMonitor
BTW: May you install and run echo service on remote systems? Or its prohibited? What about firewalls?
