Web Service problems

Post by grberk »

Just installed Web Service, and many times when accessing the main page, I get lots of 404 errors like this:

404 Not Found
The requested URL /favicon.ico was not found on this server.

I set the maximum simultaneous connections up to 20. No luck.

What do I do to make this go away for good? It works sometimes if I refresh the page to load again.

favicon.ico ???
Our Web Service does not use such file and does not contain any link to this file.
Are you typing favicon.ico in the URL?
Are you sure you are connecting to out Web Service?

No I am not typing favicon.ico in the URL. It just shows up. I am using IE6 with XP SP2, Maxthon and Firefox.

The website loads up with the errors in Maxthon, will not load up at all in IE6, but works fine in Firefox.

Anyone else running into this problem?

Theoretically browser may request favicon.ini (optional icon of the site). But it should not display any error when this file is not present, 95% of web sites does not have such icon.
Does browser displays this error right on web page??

Yes is shows up in the browser. Here are some links to articles that explain what some browsers are doing with this file...

Useful information but... often Web Service does not provide any unprotected folder/file. Only if "Allow access to folder <path to folder> for everybody" option is enabled, there is unprotected folder.
Probably Web Service can provide access to favicon at any circumstances...

PS
The website loads up with the errors in Maxthon, will not load up at all in IE6, but works fine in Firefox.
Does it means IE6 on XP SP2 doesn't work with Web Service??? It works fine on our system...

Quite possibly something to do with IE 6 with SP2 in XP.

I just tried accessing web service on our server with a Windows 2000 and IE6. It works fine.

We tested on SP2 - no problem.
But our Windows XP systems crahed after we installed "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)" patch.
Have you installed this patch?

We have tested Windows XP with SP2, we have tested Windows XP without SP, we tested Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. We tried Internet Explorer 5 and IE 6, Netscape 7 and Opera 8.5. No error at all.
May be you have installed some plug-in that changed behavior of the browser?
Or may be you are using Windows XP Home (we never tested Home edition)?
