Same configuration for hundreds of RMAs

Post by Wabiloo »

Hi,

I would be very interested to use HostMonitor to monitor a very large number of computers that we are selling to clients all over the world.
However, what I'd have to be able to do is as follows:

- Be able to easily add new RMAs to HostMonitor
- All the computers we are selling have similar configuration so therefore we would want to run the same set of tests on all RMAs, and therefore whenever a new RMA is installed (several times a day), we would have to be able to easily copy the set of tests to run on it
- Be able to "upgrade" the full set of tests to all RMAs, every time we come up with new tests.

I've played a bit with the replicator, but it seems a little bit difficult to use when more than simply the IP address changes.

Is there a way to do all that?

You may add new agents using "Agents List" window in HostMonitor ( http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... #agentlist ) or using "RMA Manager" ( http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rma- ... /index.htm ). "RMA MAnager" also allows you import/export the list of agents, from/to CSV file: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rma- ... m#comments

Here you may use several approaches.
1. Copy and modify the the tests manually.
2. You may use menu "File" -> "Import from text file" to load this special formatted text file with tests: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/examples/import1.htm
This operation can be automated by using "Execute HMS script" action with "ImportFromFile" command: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... #actScript
You may use "Replicator" utility or use some third party software to generate the list of test you need: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/replicator/index.htm

"RMA Manager" allows you to upgrade set of agents in one click: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/rma- ... ow_upgrade

Actually, "Replicator" allows you to change ANY string you specify, not just IP address.

Yes, that is right, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be able to change more than 1 type of string *at the same time*.
Typically, in the list of tests for one of my RMAs (ie. one of my client machines), I will find information specific to that machine, with among others:
- The name of the agent (RMAgent=)
- The IP address of the machine (for example for the ping test)
- The Hostname of the machine
- The name of the folder in which the tests are stored (I tend to have a folder for each machine/RMA) (DestFolder= or DefaultFolder=)

All these strings are interrelated and so when a new battery of test is to be generated (for a new RMA that just got connected), I'd have to replicate the settings and change all of them at once.

Can Replicator do that, or am I better off finding a 3rd party tool or creating my own script to do that?

I think its easy to create such relation. E.g. if you use IP address as a suffix for RMA name and Folder name (e.g. you may set "RMA at 192.168.10.10" as name of the agent) then you will be able to replicate addresses, RMA names and folders at the same time.
If you really need to use completely unrelated names, then I am sorry - Replicator will not help you much in such case.
