Monitoring problems on virtual machines

Hi,

I am monitoring a number of servers with a wide variety of tests, however I have an issue with 2 servers (Windows 2003 Server - Web Edition - SP1) these servers are virtual machines (running under MS Virtual Server). There's no firewall between the hostmon machine and these servers.

The below tests all fail with the status of "Unknown" however hostmon can see the server, the ping test works.

Performance Counters
UNC (availability/free space)
NTLog

I'm using Hostmon 7.20 and these servers are being tested by Hostmon (no RMA for these 2 servers) The user account being used for connection is the same one used for all other tests that are working. I've tried connecting to the servers by their IP address and FQDN.

Can anyone help?

Do you see any error message in "Reply" field for these test? You may enable "Show errors description in "Reply" field when cannot access resource" in "Options" -> "Miscellaneous" tab -> "Settings for UNC tests" area. With this option enabled, HostMonitor will put error description in "Reply" field in case "UNC" test cannot access to resource.

Beside that, "Performance Counter" and "Nt Event Log" test methods require administrative privileges. What account do you use to start HostMonitor? We recommend to start HostMonitor under admins account.

Also please make sure
1) RPC service is started on target system
2) Remote Registry Service is started on target system
3) PerfOS.DLL is enabled on target system
4) PerfProc.DLL is enabled on target system
5) Check if "admin" account has KEY_READ access to the following registry key on target system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows_NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib.
To view/change permissions to the registry key you can use the registry editor utility (Regedt32.exe).

Microsoft provides "Extensible Counter List" utility: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
This utility displays list of DLLs that are used to support Performance Counters, using the utility you may disable/enable specific DLLs.

Max,

Thanks for the quick reply, the user has administrative privileges on the servers being checked, hostmonitor is also started with administrative privileges.

I have checked your suggestions and everything is as it should be, UNC tests were reporting "Access denied" and have fixed these tests, however the performance counters are still returning Unknown. Any more suggestions?

Max,

Found the problem, its something on the server as I can't monitor performance counters using perfmon on that server from any other servers, so its not a hostmonitor issue.

Hm. What exact error do you see after "Perf Monitor" attempt to connect to target server? What error do you see in "Reply" field for the "Performance Counter" test method?

The error I get when using performance monitor is: Its "unable to connect to machine", I've followed the info in the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300702, but everything is OK on this front.

In the reply field there's nothing listed.

Max have just sorted it as you replied. I had to restart the "Remote Registry" service a few times after the second restart hostmonitor started returning the expected results. Weird one.
