Active RMA initial configuration

Post by russionix »

I am having trouble finding a configuration for Active RMA that works.
My Active RMA machine is Windows 2003 Server Standard edition, SP1. My HostMonitor machine is Windows 2000 SP4.
I have "Accept connections from active RMA on TCP port 5057" enabled on HM.
My Active RMA "host Monitor Parameters" "Host" setting pointing to the HM machine by IP. When I set the "port" to 5057 I get a "connection error: Wrong reply packet received." When I set the port to 5056, I simply get a "connection error."

I always see the red "HM is not connected" and on the HM side "RMA not connected."

Both machines are on the same subnet and no firewall. If I telnet to the RMA port, I get a cursor (not a rejection - so I don't think it is a firewall issue).

Can anyone provide some basic steps for configuring Active RMA? I mostly need to know how the ports should be configured in HM and the RMA and which IP address should be in the RMA "Host" field.

thank you for your help.

Most likely error means you have not specified agent parameters on HostMonitor's side. You may use "RMA Manager" utility or "Agents List" window to add the appropriate agent.

To use the active agent you should perform the following steps:
1. Specify "Accept connections from active RMA on TCP port X" option in HostMonitor's menu "Options" -> "Active RMA server" tab. You have already specified 5057.
2. On the remote machne, you have to start rma_cfg.exe utility and select "Setup Active RMA" option. In appeared window, you should specify the agent name and password into "Agent identification" area. Also you should provide the IP-address of the machine, where HostMonitor is running into "Host" input box in "HostMonitor parameters" area. Into the "Port" box, you have to specify the port, you have specified into "Accept connections from active RMA on TCP port X" on hostMonitor's side.
3. On HostMonitor's side, you should create a record for this agent using "Agents List" window or "RMA Manager". Into the "Agent Connection parameters" window, you should specify the same agent name and password that you have specified on the agent's side using rma_cfg.exe utility.
4. Now you may start agent on remote system

Normally port 5057 is used by RMA Manager while HostMonitor uses port 5056 for Active RMA connections. Looks like you have changed port for HostMonitor (is there any reason for this?) but you forgot to change active port for RMA Manager. 2 applications cannot use the same port. Active RMA tries to connect to HostMonitor but there is RMA Manager instead.
Please restore original configuration.

Active RMA initial configuration

Post by russionix »

Thank you. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything to make sure my ports were at their defaults. The key for setting this up properly for me was matching the agent name on both sides. I didn't realize they had to be the same, but it makes sense. The active RMA tests are now working.

Actually, you may use any ports you want. You just should ensure you specified the same ports on agent's and HostMonitor's sides.

It is necessary for authentication as well.

Glad to hear that. :-)

I hope up to date manual will be available next week, it will help to avoid such misunderstanding.
