Windows Performance Settings

Post by johnm »

A few questions regarding HM and Windows Performance settings.

1. Is Host Monitor considered an application or background service? Does this classification change depending on if you run it as a Windows service?

2. For Windows 2003, which are the best settings on a machine running Host Monitor as a service, see below?

a. Adjust processor for best performance of Programs or Background Services?

b. Adjust memory for best performance of Programs or System Cache?

Thanks...

Is Host Monitor considered an application or background service?
You may start HostMonitor as application or service. Its up to you.
Does this classification change depending on if you run it as a Windows service?
Classification depends on what application (window) is active. Quote from Microsoft:
...Foreground program - the program that runs in the active window; the topmost window whose title bar is highlighted
...Background program the program that runs while user is working on another task"

As I know "Background program" == "Background service" == "any process except one with active window", Microsoft just want to confuse us :)
For Windows 2003, which are the best settings on a machine running Host Monitor as a service, see below?
Adjust processor for best performance of Programs or Background Services?
If HostMonitor is foreground application (you always keep HostMonitor as foreground application), you may use any of these 2 options. Otherwise we recommend to use "Background" option.
