RMA Problems

Post by mclark »

I currently have the RMA loaded on 8 systems. Once last week and already again this week, I have an RMA that quits responding. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled but that didn't help. When I try to launch the RMA utility on the remote system, it tells me that "RMA can not be launched in multiple instances...", even after stopping the service and verifying that no RMA processes are running and netstat shows no active connection on Port 1055. To correct this problem last week, I had to change the RMA port. Is there something I am overlooking since I am new to this application?

Thanks,

Mike

Could you please provide more information?
- RMA version?
- Windows version (or Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris)?
- Service Pack?
- Do you use ODBC test method? If yes, what ODBC driver do you use?
- Do you have installed some antivirus monitors, personal firewall, content monitoring software? Non stanard winsock components?

This is on a Windows 2000 Terminal Server SP4
RMA V3.37
AV is Computer Associates Etrust V8.0

This same problem happened on a different server (W2k3 SP1, RMA V3.35) at a different location last week and the only way I could fix it was to change from port 1055 to port 1060.

As I know Etrust is not only a scanner that checks files, it monitors incoming traffic as well. So, it probably replaces system DLLs or installs driver to intercept network packets. May be this leads to the problem
Just like Norton Antivirus and McAfee leads to problems when it checks SMTP traffic.
Could you install RMA on clean system? You are using RMA to monitor remote networks? Or each RMA monitors single system?

In both instances, the RMA was installed after the AV was installed. Both RMA's were operational for weeks before they quit working. In the first case, just changing to port 1060 resolved the issue. No changes were made to the AV to resolve this. I have several RMA's loaded on systems running CA Etrust.

Thanks,

It doesn't matter when you install RMA because it does not change any system settings or DLLs.
In the first case, just changing to port 1060 resolved the issue.
You changed the port because 1st instance of the agent was not terminated or it was terminated but system could not release port due to some error.
Both RMA's were operational for weeks before they quit working
Could you install RMA on clean system? Antivirus monitors often lead to problems because they change system behaviour and not always correctly.

Thanks. I will try to locate a system without AV. Unfortunately, I believe all of our systems have AV loaded. On the current system, netstat is not showing anything using port 1055 after I have killed all the services and processes. I will post if I find anything causing this problem.

Thanks again,

Mike

For some unknown reason, the RMA has started working again this morning. I haven't made any changes on either end so I still don't know what caused or resolved the problem.

Thanks again,

Do you use RMA to check SMTP (mail) servers? E.g. McAfee works fine if RMA does not perform SMTP tests or you have disable McAfee mail scanning. May be the same will work for Etrust...
