Performance counters not working or VERY slow

Post by MADS »

How come that the Performance counter for CPU (for example) is SO slow that it will return an error.
This is on WIN2003 servers
On WIN2003 SP1 we don't get the performance counters to work
WIN2000 are ok

HostMon version 5.70

Yes, there are too many troubles with Performance Counters. :-)

Usually Performance Counter test returns result within several seconds (when Windows and all necessary services and DLLs work correctly) or returns error within 30 sec (if something doesn't work).

What type of problem do you have exactly?
What particular error do you retrieve?

KS Soft has announced, that in new version WMI test will be implemented.
WMI is more reliable to check performance.

Thx for the quick reply

I get Unknown for several servers (70) about 20 replies eventually after I disabled them all and reenabled them one by one

I get an object could not be found....after a while

WMI is due when? :-)

Yes, Performance Counters implementation is the worst part of the Windows. We spent a lot of time trying to find workarounds for different problems... Using Search function you may find many articles related to this problem.

I hope HostMonitor 5.80 will be available for download next week. This version introduces new test method - WMI test. WMI is different technology from Microsoft, it provides various system information and works more releable than Performance Counters (as far as we know).

OK, Thx

But why is it working at one site and not on another?

Is a beta available yet?

... that it will return an error
What exactly error?
But why is it working at one site and not on another?
Good question to Microsoft.
Actually there are many possible reasons... Could you perform some tests and provide more information?

1) Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 systems located in the same domain? Different domains? Remote network protected by firewall?

2) please check that the following services are started on remote system
- RPC service
- Remote Registry service

3) check if HostMonitor can perform Service test against that system

4) check if HostMonitor can perform CPU Usage test against that system

5) check status of performance DLLs on remote system
Microsoft provides "Extensible Counter List" utility: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
This utility displays list of DLLs that are used to support Performance Counters, using the utility you may disable/enable specific DLLs.

As I said there is Search function. We already answered to such questions many times. Often our answers help to fix the problem. But not always :(
Is a beta available yet?
Next week
