Sometimes the Windows Service tests take up to 60 seconds

Post by mrw »

Hi,
I have a specific closed environment that has its own active RMA agent that run tests on the local lan. Mostly on Windows Servers 2012 R2 and newer.
Everything works as it should, except that sometimes(roughly 50%) the Windows Service tests can take around either 20, 40 or 60 seconds to get a reply. It doesn´t matter if the reply is Good or Bad. It should take just a couple of ms to do these tests so we are trying to figure out why it sometimes takes this extremely long.
This problem in only on the Windows Service tests. Its also strange that when it takes this long its always in 20 second intervals. 20, 40 or 60 seconds. Never 15 seconds for instance.

Now we are pretty sure the problem does not lie within Hostmon, but rather our network, or perhaps the server that runs the rma.
But we would really like to know what method the Windows Service test uses since this is the only affected tests. Is is some specific protocol that our switches might have a problem with? Unlikely, but then again this problem is so weird..

Any help or suggestions in much welcome.

Yes, very strange.
HostMonitor uses Windows API for this test, that works over RPC calls.
If this problem somehow relates to RPC, then I think other tests like CPU Usage, Process, NT Event Log should lead to the same problem.
If this is just Service test, probably something wrong with target server.

Oh, Windows firewall may lead to similar problems; when some rules enabled, some do not.
Remote Service Management (RPC) enabled?
Remote Service Management (NP-In) enabled?
If you enable just NP-In then test may work unstable

Thanks for your reply!

We do CPU tests on all the servers and none of them takes more than a couple of ms to get answers.
We have this problem on all of the monitored servers which is around 30-35.
All have the same problem.

I will install an RMA on another server to see if that makes any difference, in case the problem is with the RMA-server.

Try to disable firewall and antivirus on one system

I disabled the firewall and let it run for a couple of days, and that seems to have solved it! :)
It did not think that the firewall could cause slow responstime for such api-calls. If the tests didn´t work at all then the firewall is more likely.
Strange.

But thank you very much for helping me solve this!

You are welcome.

Have you tried to enable firewall and allow both options?
- Remote Service Management (RPC)
- Remote Service Management (NP-In)
