We can implement new tests using VMWare MOB (Managed Object Browser), looks like it works faster and provide more information than VMWare API.
And it should be secured, it works over HTTPS protocol. However VMWare recommends to disable this interface for security reasons.
Question to everyone:
a) have you disabled this interface?
b) you are keeping interface enabled?
c) you disabled interface but you do not see any problem opening it for HostMonitor monitoring?

Hi!
I have no idea what VMware MOB is(which protocols, ports, usage, and so on) but according to my vmware admin the answers to your questions in my case are:
a) No
b) Yes
c) N/A. And if it were disabled by any chance we canīt see any reason for not opening it. Although we would like to know more about that service to be sure. Perhaps there are other disadvantages with using it? Performance issues? Why does VMware recommend disabling this?
On the whole is anything that can provide more information from an ESXi host is VERY welcome

There is utility for VMWare, shows host and guests CPU and memory usage: www.ks-soft.net/download/vmMon1.zip
We tested this program with ESXi versions 4.1, 5.1, 5.5
Could you test how it works with your ESXi systems?

I have tried this utility now on 3 different ESXi hosts.
They all produced a correct CPU usage in %, and lots of info for each VM.
Some of my VMs do not have VMtools installed or is an old version and your tool produced some error dialogs on those which were: "VMCapability request failed. No answer", and "VMruntime request failed. No answer".
The only thing that did NOT work is the Memory Usage test in %. It gave me values like: -0.01%, 1.05%, -13.04% and so on. The results should be somewhere between 80-99% on my 3 hosts.
But this shows great potential! Great work! Iīd be very happy to test newer releases of this tool when they are ready!

ESXi version?
Wrong memory usage displayed for VM host or VM guests? both?

ESXi version: 5.1
And I mean the memory usage is incorrect for the host. The graph just below the cpu graph.
The memory for each VM seams to be correct. |

We cannot reproduce this problem on our ESXi 5.1

One of my sysadmin just tested this tool against v5.1 + v5.1U1 and v5.5
Works fine
Will you enable monitoring of hardware as well..? Hard disk failure, power supply failure, network link down, etc.. |

May be later... this will require different monitoring method and will depend on 3rd party software (providers from hardware vendor).
So far we implemented 7 tests:
- VM host status
- VM host CPU usage
- VM host memory usage
- VM guests status (one test may check all guest systems)
- VM guests CPU usage (one test may check all guest systems)
- VM guests memory usage (one test may check all guest systems)
- VM guests disk free space (one test may check all guest systems, all disks - only if VMWare Tools installed)

Okay, understandable that you want to wait with this then
You mention "Guest free space"
Personally I don't find this as interesting as eg LUN Free space
I mean, I already know free space on the guests from my normal monitoring of the virtual machine.
I'm more interested in how much free space there is on the storage that the ESXi has access to..
Otherwise I will need SNMP access to the SAN..

Hi,
We canīt give you HTTPS access Iīm afraid. Unless you know how we would setup an account with very restricted access right since we canīt let you see anything regarding the VMs located on it.
If not, then how can we troubleshoot this? Why canīt we see memory usage on any of our ESXi servers? Everything else seems to work fine. |
