error retrieving service list from some servers

Post by JohanHofmans »

strange thing: we're having trouble with any test that requires credentials
eg retrieving a service list on a server might work on one server while it doens't on another.
the two tested servers are in the same subnet as the hm server - so no firewall or otherwist blocking anything.
same with retreiving eg cpu load.
general question: what exactly is necessary to allow HM to retrieve a service list, test a service and check the cpu load
what might be the cause of this?
thanks!!

Hi,

I had the same trouble on identical servers, and found the way to resolve it.(probably due to your performance counter on your server)

Look here and try it :

Keep us informed.

What exactly is the problem? What is test status?
Bad? Unknown? Unknown host?

When HostMonitor cannot perform Service or CPU Usage tests, it sets Unknown status and shows error description in Reply field of the test.
Could you please check test Status and Reply fields and tell us what do you see?

Have you specified admin account using "Connect as" property of the test or Connection Manager?
If HostMonitor is started as service, have you specified admin account on Service page in the Options dialog (HostMonitor Options dialog)?
general question: what exactly is necessary to allow HM to retrieve a service list, test a service and check the cpu load
what might be the cause of this?
Service test requires Windows RPC service, open ports on firewall (all TCP ports above 1023), Power user credentials.

CPU test requires
1) admin user credentials
2) RPC service should be started on both systems
3) Remote Registry service should be started on target system
4) account that you are using for the test should have KEY_READ access to the following registry key on target system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows_NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib.
To view/change permissions to the registry key you can use the registry editor utility (Regedt32.exe).
5) no firewall between 2 system blocks TCP ports above 1023
6) PerfOS.DLL should be enabled on target system

I tried the ip address and the dns name, with and without leading \\'s.
The 'last reply' is saying "Win32 error #1722" - which is an RPC error. The RPC service is running correctly, i even tried rebooted the server...
this server has no other connectivity issues.
the server which DOES work has the same config, is in the same domain and in the same subnet (also the same subnet as hostmonitor - so no firewalls or otherwise).
when I use the same test, and I replace the ip with the ip of the server which is OK, it immediately works.
when I try to get a list of services, the error is "cannot retrieve service list from be01s169"
I would think this is a server-related problem, but we've had this problem only a few weeks, and only several servers have this problem - others do not...
whats the next thing I can try / find out?
thanks...

H'm, you said "two tested servers are in the same subnet as the hm server - so no firewall or otherwist blocking anything". However this does not mean that Windows built-in firewall cannot block connections.
Could you check Windows firewall status and disable it?

What Windows do you use? Service Pack?
Do you have installed some antivirus monitors, personal firewall, content monitoring software? Non stanard winsock components?
Does "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" component is enabled?

Hi Alex,

No windows firewall runs on the machines...

Test machines: all Win2k3server SP2
as far as I know they have all the same configuration.

strange thing is that previously they all worked - now, since a few weeks, some don't... should I try downgrading?

is there some logfile I can upload or check?

thanks!

Downgrade HostMonitor? This will not help because its Windows problem.
Downgrade Service Pack to SP1? I don't think its a good idea either.
Log file? As I know Windows RPC service does not provide any logs :(

Do you have installed some antivirus monitors, personal firewall, content monitoring software? Non stanard winsock components?
Does "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" component is enabled?

Hi all,

JohanHofmans, did you try what I wrote above ? (http://www.ks-soft.net/cgi-bin/phpBB/vi ... php?t=5883)

I said that I have sames troubles with SAME error message due to performance counter corrupted on server .

.....and, on your server, I'm sure that you can't do a CPU test, because it's linked too at performance counters on your server, and as they are corrupted, you'll have error message too.

All checking you made(Service pack, logs, firewall, route, services, registry, etc .....) I did it(during 3 days!!!) before I found the way to resolve this problem ..........but, if you want to turn around your problem even if there is a solution :-? ......... it's your choice :o .

Have a nice day

Gilali,
Actually your problem is not exactly the same. Process test works with Performance Counters, it requires RPC service, Remote Registry Service, Performance Counters DLLs.
Service test requires RPC service only, it does not request Performance Counters.
