I need to start monitoring the event log contained within Dell Open Manage Server Administrator (OMSA?).
This will tell me for instance if a drive in a RAID array has failed or a Power supply has become unpluged or a Memory chip has failed etc.
Currently I rely on the LED on the Dell Poweredge Server going orange. That's not good. I'm assuming SNMP is what I need but I'm unfamiliar with SNMP so any assistance here would be great.

Yes, Dell Open Manage Server Administrator can send SNMP Trap messages, also Dell provides SNMP agent that can be requested by HostMonitor.

How to setup Dell Open Manage Server Administrator? You should check the manuals that come with your server.
Some information available here http://ftp.dell.com/app/2q03-Mao.pdf

How to setup SNMP Get and SNMP Trap test items using HostMonitor?
There is our manual:
http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#tests.htm#chkSNMP
http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#tests.htm#snmptrap
Also you may use MIB Browser to check counters provided by SNMP agent:
