I am trying to run HM as a service and it seems to work. However I do not get an Icon
and the popup that allows me to turn off the WAV that I have set to play does not work. Is there a way to have that capability?

I have to restart the service to get the WAV
turned off.

There are can be several reasons why you don't see icon:
1) "Icon in system tray" option (located on Preferences page in the Options dialog) is disabled.
2) service starts under user account instead of "local system" account (standard Services application, Service Properties dialog)
3) option "allow service interact with desktop" is disabled (standard Services application)
4) you use Terminal Service to connect to remote system where HostMonitor is running.

Regards
Alex
