Bad status when VRFY enabled on SMTP test

Post by dazhallt5 »

Hostmonitor version 6.10

OS Server 2003 SP1
Exchange 2003 SP2

Hi when I use the SMTP test with VRFY enabled I’m getting a Status = Bad. When I do not use the VRFY the Status = Host is Alive.

I have used telnet to access out exchange and used the vrfy command and I get the following.

252 2.1.5 Cannot VRFY user, but will take message for ....

When looking this up it says
By default, this command is available in Exchange 2003, but does not verify users. The server will inform the remote host that, although the user cannot be verified, messages will be accepted.

So I suppose my question is, can Hostmonitor be changed to acknowledge the response and class this as 'Alive' or do I have to change my exchange server to allow the name to be verified? When looking this up it looks to be a security leak if I do enable it.

Truth to say I do not see any problem here. If you mark "Perform VRFY" option and server does not return information about specified account, status should be "Bad".
If you want to check connection without using VRFY command, disable the option.

If you want to monitor certain user account, I would recommend you to try MailRelay test method: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mfra ... #mailrelay
