Alternative way to send emails of HM

Post by AntonyP »

Scenario:

The email server has problems sending emails, but it still can receive them from HM (i do not mean an SMTP or POP3 problem, just an internal problem of the server). A secondary email server has been configured in HM as a backup one.

Is there a way for HM to send all emails using the SECOND email server whenever it sees that the primary email server has problems?

In such case HostMonitor will never notice the primary server has problems. You should do something manually. E.g. you may go to Options > Mailer Settings and change values from Primary account to Backup Account and vice versa. May be, it is a good idea to implement special "Switch" button to switch accounts manually. We will be thinking about it.

Is it possible to add an option in the Actions settings to DEFINE which emailer profile will be used?? That would surely solve the problem.

I do not think so. The goal of existing approach is a possibility to switch accounts in case of crash. And it works for all actions in all profiles. You may have a lot profiles with Send Email Actions. And what will you do when mail profile you have specified for most of actions will have such problems you mentioned above? You should manually change mail profile for each action, right? It is not the best solution, I suppose, but I understood your point. We will discuss it with Alex.

If you need actions to send e-mail thru different mail servers, you may use SendMail utility from IP-Tools package
http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/mfr ... ndmail.htm
Utility provides command line interface and can be started by HostMonitor (using "Execute external program" action)

Utility provides the same primary/backup mail server options. But you may copy utility into 2 different folders and specify different primary servers for each copy

If the problem with the primary email server occurs and i am here to notice it, i can manually change the config of the email settings. But what happens if it starts when i am not at work? I could easily setup an email relay test and according to its results, i would like HM to switch from one email server to the other. I suppose that an extra configuration in the action profiles, like i requested, would be easier than having HM switching from one configuration to another. Of course, as you say, all action profiles would need to be re-configured if this feature was implemented, but i really think it is worth the time and effort.

MailRelay test method was implemented in version 6.00. So you may setup MailRelay test and assign alert profile to trigger HMScript action with SetUserVariable command. This way it is possible to start different mailers that were configured to use different mail servers

This would make a very neat feature. Nothing I see as neccesary right now, but very useful. Would love to see a "switch mail server for alerts if relay fails" checkbox.
