set up to receive traps

Post by fletch »

Hi All,
I am trying to set up host monitor to receive traps sent by Dell's Open Manage IT Assitant. IT Assit allows me to send it to any machine any port, etc. I also have all the MIB's [if need be] to import into host mon.

I want to set up host mon to receive these MIB's and publish on dash board to cut down the amount of screens we watch and focus on the good product.

Can I get a link or doc on what I have to do to set up host mon to receive and then publish these snmp traps forwarded by IT Assit?

To receive traps you should use "SNMP Trap" test method. If you have installed latest version (5.12), see pages 46-50 in the manual.doc (MS Word file)

Not sure what exactly means "publish". HostMonitor may display received traps on screen, it may generate HTML, Text or DBF reports, it may record info into logs and send e-mail....

Joining the question:
The thing is that Trap test can be performed only by RMA.
Can I use external element/device to send SNMP Trap to?

Thanks.

Not really.
SNMP Trap test can be used by HostMonitor directly or you may setup Active RMA to forward SNMP Trap messages from remote system to HostMonitor.

This is the purpose of this test - listen for SNMP Trap messages that some other devices send to HostMonitor.
How to configure some device (e.g. router) to send Trap messages to HostMonitor? Well, you should read manual that comes with this specific device.
