I'm trying to use the compare files feature with a "File Contains String" option to search for a string in a log file for a database. I've used the UNC name and mapped directory to a local drive. When I run the monitor, it quickly goes to a bad status in either case. I can use an editor in the run window with the UNC name of the directory/file and bring up the file contents. I am running HostMonitor on Win2K against a NT 4 Server. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I may be wrong, but I thought a bad status indicated that the string actually exists in the file?

Yes, if you set "file contains string" option and file contains specified string, HostMonitor will mark test as "Bad". If you want to start alert actions when file does not contain string, use "file does not contain string" option.
Unfortunately from 1st message I do not understand does file contains specified string or does not.

Talk about feeling stupid, yes, it is correctly working. It happened so fast, I thought it wasn't recognizing the file or doing the search for the string as the log file is quite large.

Great product!!
