"No answer" on SMTP servers

Post by netnetnet »

I've configured two SMTP tests to servers on my local network. Both of them return only "no answer". I've uninstalled Norton AV, and can telnet to both of the servers just fine.
Since it wasn't working I tried a TCP connection test to port 25 instead and get the same thing.

I'm sure I'm just doing something stupid, but there isn't much to it either! Thanks for the help.

What version of HostMonitor do you use?
What TCP test settings do you use? Do you use "Send data", "Alert when" options?
Can we access your server for testing?

v5.38
Which TCP settings are you referring to? I didn't use Send Data or Alert When options.
An example server is -removed-.

Thanks again.

An example server is mail.longagent.com
Just tested HostMonitor 5.38 - both test methods (TCP and SMTP) display "Host is alive" status.
May be you have some personal firewall installed?

What Windows do you use? Service Pack?
HostMonitor started as service? or application?

Interesting. No firewalls, Windows XP Pro with all updates/patches, HM runs as an app. I'll try the same config on a different PC to see how it behaves.

Okay I put it up onto one of our 2003 Server systems and it works fine, with one exception. MS SQL monitoring gives No Answer as well. Does that *require* the client, or is that just a recommendation?

Thanks.
