|
|
Hello, my network admin wants to know what port is used by the CPU Test and other tests that require the Remote Registry service on Windows XP/2000/2003, and if the test can communicate through a NAT. |

Windows uses RPC for such calls. RPC may use any port above 1023.
So, if you need to monitor remote network protected by firewall, its better use Remote Monitoring Agent installed in that network

Thanks. RMA is not an option as I cannot install anything on my client's machines.
For my education, do you specify the port somewhere or just let it go find one above 1023 automatically? For example, if we have port 6000 open then will it just use that one?
Thanks, Bret[/code] |

Actually we do not specify these ports. RPC is part of the Windows, Windows (TM) is product of Microsoft. So, Microsoft manages ports used by RPC.

Sorry, it will not work. Windows assigns ports dynamically.
Why do you think we have developed agent?

Apologies for the miswording of the question; let me try again.
Can a HostMonitor/system administrator specify a port for the RPC call the CPU test makes so that a fixed port is always used and can be assigned in the firewall? Could we achieve this by opening a single RPC-eligible port in our server firewall that the CPU test would always see as RPC-eligible and therefore use? Or, will Windows always give us a different port every time the call is made? |

As I said Quote: | Sorry, it will not work. Windows assigns ports dynamically. |
"dynamically" means Windows uses different ports.

No, this is impossible.
