Normally my Traffic tests says something like Status: "OK" and Reply: "2236,20 Kb", but once in a while I get

Status: "Host is alive" and with an empty reply.

Here's the log for two switches that I test every 5 minutes.

Code:
09/08/11 07:58:15 HP Switch Traffic   Host is alive
09/08/11 07:21:13 DLink Switch Traffic   Ok   922,31 Kb
09/08/11 07:18:04 HP Switch Traffic   Ok   835,30 Kb
09/08/11 07:16:12 DLink Switch Traffic   Host is alive
09/08/11 07:13:03 HP Switch Traffic   Host is alive
09/08/11 05:57:41 HP Switch Traffic   Ok   916,18 Kb
09/08/11 05:52:40 HP Switch Traffic   Host is alive
09/08/11 05:30:42 DLink Switch Traffic   Ok   1004,06 Kb
09/08/11 05:25:40 DLink Switch Traffic   Host is alive

I'm using Hostmonitor 8.14.

I have tried to increase timeout and retries but it doesn't seem to make any mayor difference.

Is this a bug or why do I get the "Host is alive"?

Thanks,
Hakan Haskel

You get "Host is alive" when Traffic Monitor test item is just created or HostMonitor just started.
When HostMonitor does not have necessary information about device yet, it retrieves current counters from target device and sets "Host is alive" status.

OK, now I see it. In the majority of my Traffic tests the "Host is alive" is from when I have restarted Hostmonitor.

But in about ten of my Traffic tests some local and some over WAN-links on totally different devices i still get at least 10 random "Host is alive" a day.

Could something else trigger "Host is alive" ?

Regards
Hakan

Another posible reason - target device was restarted so statistics were reset. Also SNMP counters on device could be overfilled and started over...
