The Simple Network Management Protocol is the Internet standard protocol for exchanging management information between management console applications and managed entities (hosts, routers, bridges, hubs).

What exactly error message? What OS do you use? If you want to check remote device you should use Windows NT/2000/XP. This test cannot retrieve information from remote system when you start HostMonitor on Windows 9x/ME. Also make sure you provide correct OID and community string.

I have a win2k server box running host monitor and i want to do snmp checks on remote servers. I dont know a huge amount about snmp, but it seems snmp will be my key to monitoring alot of things.

May be remote device does not support SNMP protocol. If you want to check Windows system, make sure SNMP service is started on this system. If you want to check some device (e.g. router), please check manual for this device. Probably you have to enable SNMP support or may it does not support SNMP protocol at all.

I think you can find MIB lists for different devices in Internet. There is one of lists (Windows supports these MIBs) http://www.ks-soft.net/download/winmib.zip
