|
|
Hi !
Running HM 6.82 on Win2003 SP2.
From time to time various URL checks fails. The test goes into status "Checking" but nothing happens.
Yesterday a certain URL did in fact fail. When it failed the test went into status "Checking" and a customer had to call and report the the URL failed as HM did not send any alerts.
When the URL went okay again HM did not change the status from "Checking" to "Host is alive". The only way to make this particular test work again was a complete restart af HostMonitor.
We have seen this behaviour from time to time before, so perhaps there is a problem somewhere in the URL test method.
Unfortunately this problem cannot be reproduced at will. I can tell that these URL tests are performed by the RMA's located at the servers that run the individual websites and that we don't use any macros, passwords etc. We only do simple content checks.
Please let me know if I can provide you with more details.
Thanks !

Could you provide more information, please?
- What Windows is installed on the server, where RMA is running? Service Pack?
- What version of RMA is installed?
- What timeout is specified on RMA's side (rma.ini file or in rma_cfg.exe utility)?
- What timeout is specified for RMA on HostMonitor's side (Agents List window or RMA Manager)?
- Do the "URL" tests check HTTP or HTTPS?
- What exact timeout is specified for "URL" tests in "Test Properties" window?
- How often does HostMonitor perform these URL tests? Every minute? Every hour?
Regards,

Hi all,
I just want to confirm a problem with the "URL request" method and RMA
I have several URL tests running from HostMonitor - all working
The same tests (a copy) running from RMA: One of the tests is going to "Bad contents" every 2nd or 3rd day.
I can't tell you more, because I solved that problem by restarting RMA every night with a scheduled job.
And in the meantime I have updated to latest HM and RMA. (scheduled job is still in place)
It's not my server, therefore I can give you only some answers:
- What version of RMA is installed? What came with HM6.82
- What timeout is specified on RMA's side (rma.ini file or in rma_cfg.exe utility)? Timeout=10000
- What timeout is specified for RMA on HostMonitor's side (Agents List window or RMA Manager)? 30 sec
- Do the "URL" tests check HTTP or HTTPS? HTTPS (with contents should contain ...)
- What exact timeout is specified for "URL" tests in "Test Properties" window? 15 sec
- How often does HostMonitor perform these URL tests? 3 Minutes
RMA restart solves the problem for some days
Regards

Hi Juergen - Have You actually checked the contents when You get a "Bad contents"? You can use ODBC logging and store the %HttpHeader% and %HttpBody%.
If You have not tested, the "Bad contents" could actually be true? |

Hi Mos,
thanks for your answer, but that is not the problem, because ...

... while the same test performed by native HostMonitor is still "OK"

and it is not possible this could be like a "500 Server Error" or a "200 OK" with an error is the body content from the server (response) ? Any server can throws this first (500) occationally due to filesystem-error, memory error, current load error etc etc. The other is typically a programmer way.
And then it does not matter if tests are the same, copy etc. |

The same tests (a copy) running from RMA: One of the tests is going to "Bad contents" every 2nd or 3rd day. | This is a strange issue, but Norman might be right, I suppose. In fact, server might reject reqests by RMA for some reason. I think, you may check the IIS log for the certain time frame and find out the server response codes on the RMA's requests, which becomes "Bad contents" status. Could you try that? If you are using HTTPS requests, I would suggest you to try version 7.+. We slightly modidifed the "URL" test method, and now it uses "WinHTTP API" instead of "WinInet API" for HTTPS requests. The changes are applied to the new RMA as well.
I think, Kasper (initial post in this thread) has a bit different problem, that is related to HostMonitor <-> RMA communications, not to the URL test directly.

Max - Could it not be possible for Juergen to make a simple action that mails %HttpHeader% and %HttpBody% - to see the actual output? |

However, Juergen should use %HttpPage% variable, because %HttpHeader% and %HttpBody% variables have sense for the "HTTP" test method only.

I don't want to hijack this thread - so if I shall open a new one, please let me know.
I have deaktivated the scheduled task for restarting RMA - we'll see what will happen.
Currently RMA 3.62 is active with HM 6.07
eMail with %HttpPage% will be send

Hi !
Sorry for the delay - work, work, work
> Could you provide more information, please?
Sure thing !
> What Windows is installed on the server, where RMA is running? Service Pack?
I've seen the issue on both Win2KSP4 and W23SP2 servers. Also, I found out that tests performed directly by HostMonitor can fail with the described behaviour.
> - What version of RMA is installed?
Currently all RMA's are 3.44 but it's been seen on older RMA's as well
> What timeout is specified on RMA's side (rma.ini file or in rma_cfg.exe utility)?
Timeout is set to 10
> What timeout is specified for RMA on HostMonitor's side (Agents List window or RMA Manager)?
Timeout for RMA is 120
> Do the "URL" tests check HTTP or HTTPS?
Both HTTP and HTTPS checks
> What exact timeout is specified for "URL" tests in "Test Properties" window?
Some use Windows default and some are set to 10 seconds.
> How often does HostMonitor perform these URL tests? Every minute? Every hour?
Some every minute and some every 2nd or 3rd minute.
As already said, this is not easily reproducible but perhaps you can give me some guidelines on where to look the next time it happens - and also what I should look for and log.
Thanks !

I would recommend to try HostMonitor version 7.06 and latest RMA (3.62). New version of the software uses WinHTTP DLL (instead of WinInet) for HTTPS tests. According to Microsoft WinHTTP works more reliable.
If update fix the problem related to HTTPS servers, we will apply the same modifications for HTTP tests as well
