Status of the test is "Bad" when HostMonitor shows this message? This means HostMonitor found such message in NT Event Log and displays message description.
Check the source of this message

The status of the test when this reply is displayed is "Unknown." I am unable to check and see if it was actually an event because i cannot terminal service in to that machine.

Unknown status has different meaning - HostMonitor cannot retrieve information from Event Log.
I think such error can be returned by OpenEventLog or ReadEventLog function (Windows API). However we never heard about this problem before. Will check Microsoft manuals...
HostMonitor is installed on Windows XP Professional SP2?

Nothing useful in the manuals :(
May be such error may appear when you are using very small event logs (you may setup max size of the log using Event Viwer application) and you have set "Overwrite events as needed" option... Could you check log settings?
BTW: We recommend to install HostMonitor on Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows Server 2003 SP1
