How to configure single RMA to monitor multiple servers

Post by john »

Hi all,

I've been reading through the manual and the topics posted here searching for any information on how to monitor multiple servers (Solaris and RHEL 3 & 4) from a single UNIX RMA.

But I have not been able to find too much detail, I have seen Alex reply to one post saying that this can be done (sometime in Feb 2005, I think).

The issue I'm trying to overcome is not one of using less licenses, but where I have a number of servers to monitor (across the internet) behind a firewall. The problem is that there is only a single IP address and a single port open.

Is anyone doing something similar?

Can the standard tests and actions be "redirected" to a server by the RMA?

I can understand using an external test (e.g. "ssh user@server1 ls -lh /var/opt/someapp/log/server-log-file.log| cut -c38-41") from the RMA to get info from each server. Is this the only way? or am I missing something?

Thanks and Regards,
John.

Please be more specific. What exactly do you want to monitor?
- Some TCP services? Then you don't need to configure anything.
- Ping remote hosts? No, problem.
- Monitor CPU Load? You may start SNMP agent on remote systems and use SNMP Get test method; ssh is another option
- Monitor files/folders? You need some network client/server installed, e.g. Samba or NFS
and so on...

Hi Alex,

Sorry, my question was not very clear.

Is there any functionality in the RMA to act as a type of "proxy", passing on/running the standard tests and actions on other computers?

I would like to be able to run the standard tests that are available to an RMA (i.e: CPU, Disk, #Processes, File size etc. etc.) on a number of computers behind a firewall.

If this is not available, are there any plans to include this type of functionality in a future release?

Regards,
John.

Agent can send request to any remote computer, its not a problem (so it acts like proxy).
Question is "who" will process that request? E.g. How agent can request the file if network client is not installed?
That's why your question actually related to software installed on remote systems, not to the agent.
