I think I've found the cause: The logging file created by ntbackup.exe (w2k) appears to have a strange header. If I use FOR to read a line I am unsuccessfully as well. If I type the content to a second file (type backup.log > dummy.txt) I can successfully search the dummy.txt file for a string!

I use the 'file contains string' within HostMonitor on a W2k server. When checking a file on a remote NT4S station it reacts as expected.
