Hi,

Every once in a while we have an issue with Performance Counters.
At random moments, ALL Performance Counters tests fail with the error: "Error: The wait operation timed out.".
This can last from minutes to hours, but eventually things will start to work normal again, all by itself.
The tests are all within the same LAN and Subnet.
Other than the tests failing, we notice no degrading or issues in network performance or functionality.
Restarting HM services or the whole server doesn't make any difference.
We have noticed this behavior for years, but recently it shows up more frequently than it used to.
At this moment it occurs about 3-5 times a week.

When the problem occurs, however, it is still possible to add any new Performance Counter test, browse remote counters using UNC path etc.
But once the test is saved, it will fail at first run.
Also, using the Performance Monitor snapin in MMC will work just fine.

HM version: 10:14, running as service.
Running on: W2K8R2 x64, fully updated.

Old Windows had bugs in PDH.DLL but we though all problems were fixed in Windows 7/2008.
Do you have Process tests? How it works?
(Process test does not use Windows PDH.DLL but connects to remote systems in similar way)
CPU Usage tests?

What test mode do you use for Performance Counter tests?
(Options dialog -> Misc -> Performance Counter)

Average load (tests/sec) for Performance Counter tests?
(menu View->Auditing Tool)

Sounds strange... like some external reason of the problem (e.g. very slow router that misses some data).

When problem caused by PDH.DLL then HostMonitor restart or "external" test mode fixes the problem. If we assume some resource leak in HostMonitor code then again - HostMonitor restart should fix the problem.
If problem caused by some 3rd party software (e.g. antivirus) then server reboot should help.

What other test methods for the same target servers do you use?
How ping works when Performance Counter fail? Same response time and lost ratio as usually?

Regards
Alex

Mode: MultiThread

Average load: 34/min

We use all sorts of other tests on the same servers.
WMI, Ping, SNMP, CPU, Shell Scripts, Process, Drive Space, File monitor etc.
You name it, we use it.

But other than the Perfomance Counter tests failing, everything else looks absolutely perfectly normal.

The only thing - I think- I might have noticed is that the issue seems to start with one Performance Counter test taking extremely long, and meanwhile other Performance Counter tests are started and they fail because of the first one taking too long.
Could that make any sense?

Is it always the same Performance Counter test fails 1st?
What exactly counter?

Sorry, we do not have any logical explanation.
Possible solutions:
- try to move HostMonitor to different system
- or install RMA on another system and use it to perform Performance Counter tests
- or use WMI tests instead (if possible)

Alex
