dependencies - folder structure

Post by skuumm »

We're using Hostmon to monitor +1000 services on +100 servers placed on ~10 lokations.. We're usning depencies alot, so we don't get spamed when there is a network outages..

It would be greate is dependencies could be based on the folder structure instead of manually settings on each test....

Not sure I understand what exactly means "based on the folder structure"
instead of manually settings on each test....
You may use "depends on expression" mode and use some folder related variables in this expression... or you may wait for HostMonitor version 10, there is network discovery with built-in replicator - you may select host and copy&paste all (or some) tests related to this host to another host. If you copy master tests with dependants, HostMonitor will replace master test(s) for new host automatically.

Our folder structure is based on the physical connections... switche, routers, ESX hosts and Virtual machines....

so let say a core switchs goes offline, we only want one alert, and all alerts from the child nodes in the folder tree should be suppressed.. today we are creating the tests in the folder tree + we create dependencies on tests in parrent folders...

So if you setup folder tree like this
- Root
-- LAN 1 - Hub
--- LAN1 - Server1
--- LAN1 - Server2
--- LAN1 - Server3
-- LAN 2 - Hub
and HostMonitor set Bad status to some test(s) located in [LAN 1 - Hub] folder then HostMonitor should not perform tests located in the following folders
--- LAN1 - Server1
--- LAN1 - Server2
--- LAN1 - Server3
?

if HostMonitor set Bad status to some test(s) located in [Root] folder then all tests should not be performed (except tests located in Root folder)?

We afraid in many cases this will not work for entire test list, there are always some exceptions...
Probably this can be implemented as some folder-level options
