I am brand new to this software - inheriting it from a past employee. I have and am still going through the help files but for whatever reason, it's not clicking....

It was apparently configured to send a a bad (test) email to the team, and then a "good" email to let the team know that it's fully functional. The last email we got was on Monday. I continue to try to tweak the alert actions in the profiles, by testing only one test at a time, but am leery to do too much for fear of breaking something major.

I need basic help as a newbie and would like to get this up and running before the weekend as our mail stores tend to need be watched.

My email address is mtlaurie@imls.gov.
I'm also on yahoo: mtlaurie (instant messenger)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Not sure I understand you. Do you mean you cannot invoke help by pressing F1? Probably, the following article might be helpful: http://www.ks-soft.net/cgi-bin/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2847
Manual in "MS Word" format is included into the package. You may find "manual.doc" in HostMonitor's folder.
Also you may use online help, available at our site: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm

1. Please ensure alerts are enabled. You may enable alerts using menu "Monitoring" -> "Enable Alerts".
2. Please ensure monitoring is started. You may resume monitoring using manu "Monitoring" -> "Start Monitoring".
3. Do you see any errors, related to "Send Email" action in the system log (file is specified in "Options" -> "System Log" tab)? Please ensure you have enabled "Record info about successful actions" and "Record info about failed actions" options in "Options" -> "System Log" tab.
4. Have you specified proper SMTP server settings into the "Options" -> "Mailer" tab? http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#options.htm#Mailer
5. For the testing purposes, you may enable "Repeat: until status changes" option in "Action Properties" window for the certain action: http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#actions.htm#properties

Max,

I believe everything is setup. The guy that left set it all up, except, we are not getting our daily test messages that are triggered each morning to let us know everything is up and running....

Here is a copy of what we usually get

From: Hostmonitor [mailto:Hostmonitor]
Sent: Tuesday, January 01, 2008 2:50 AM
To: ITHelp; Christi Law
Subject: Bad Hostmonitor Report

Message from HostMonitor (host changed status)

Test : NTLog \\Imlsmail:MSExchangeIs Mailbox Store
Method: check NT Event Log
Status : Bad
Date : 1/1/2008 2:49:58 AM
Reply : Message not found. Insertion strings:80, First Storage Group\Mailbox Store 3 (IMLSMAIL)

Recurrences : 2
Last status: Bad
Total tests: 23781
Alive ratio : 94.87 %
Dead ratio: 4.10 %

Folder: Imlsmail

We also get a "Schedule" message that sends ITHelp mailbox the rep-full.htm report.

Right now, we aren't getting anything. Please help I've been reading your online help files all week.

P.S. Christi Law (above is no longer here) but I don't feel comfortable removing her stuff yet...til I get the hang of this software.

If you do not receive your daily messages, than something went wrong. Lets check what is wrong. I cannot figure ot out without your help, so, please, answer my questions and follow my recomendations up.

Please ensure you have enabled "Record info about successful actions" and "Record info about failed actions" options in "Options" -> "System Log" tab.

mtlaurie wrote:

Please verify HostMonitor's built-in Scheduler. You may access it using menu "Options" -> "Scheduler" tab.

At first, you shold check the system log (file is specified in "Options" -> "System Log" tab). You may view this log using menu "View" -> "System Log". Any errors? Suspicious messages, related to SMTP protocol?

Max

What exact version of HostMonitor do you use? You may find this information using menu "Help" -> "About".
Looks like pretty old version.

- Is HostMonitor started as an application or as a service?
- What account do you use to start HostMonitor? We recommend to start HostMonitor under admins account.

Please ensure you have specified proper SMTP settings into "Options" -> "Mailer" tab.
Also, for debug purposes, you may enable "Show status window when sending mail" options, located on the same tab ("Options" -> "Mailer" tab). With this option enabled, HostMonitor will display a window when sending e-mail and show all requests to and answers from the mail server.
What exact messages do you see in appeared window?

Max

Our version is 5.70

I click on the blue HostMonitor5 icon, so I guess I'm starting it as an application.

Yes, we start HostMonitor under the Administrator account.

It checked the ports...the smtp info looks right. We haven't changed anything with that.

Also, the "Show status window when sending mail" options box is checked.

I don't understand your last question: "What exact messages do you see in appeared window"....

Error: cannot send email to ithelp@imls.gov and rcraig@imls.gov

The email should send messages to ithelp@imls.gov and me (mlaurie@imls.gov) now. RCraig is gone.

When I try to go to confirm the smtp port 25 and click Save, a yellow warning icon shows up...and I cannot click Save.

In fact, it might be RCC (Remote Control Console). RCC allows you to work with HostMonitor which is running on a remote system just like you work with HostMonitor when it is started on your local system. RCC has exactly same interface as the one of the HostMonitor.

From the log file you posted before, I can see that someone (you or someone else uses RCC). "RCI connection established. Operator: Admin" message points to the RCC.
So, When you click on icon, do you see the hostMonitor's GUI directly, or do you see the "Remote Control Console" window, where you have to enter username/password?

Actually, if you are using RCC, it means HostMonitor might be started on another machine. I would ask to to figure out, where HostMonitor is installed.

mtlaurie wrote:

If "Show status window when sending mail" option is enabled, HostMonitor displays a special window each time it is trying to send the email. In this window, HostMonitor records SMTP requests and answers from the server.
Anyway, if you are using RCC, you will not show this window.

Thats mean you should remove rcraig@imls.gov address from the "Send email" action from each profile. You may reach alert profiles using menu "Profiles" -> "Action profiles". Select appropriate profile, select "Send email" action and remove "rcraig@imls.gov" from "To" input box. http://www.ks-soft.net/hostmon.eng/mframe.htm#actions.htm#actEMail

I don't see a message...just an upside yellow warning sign with an exclamation point over the word "Save". So I had to click Cancel.

It means someone opened "Options" window earlier and still has not closed it. How many instances of HostMonitor or RCC is running on your machine? What about answers on the questions, asked three posts back?

Could you provide Remote Desktop or VNC access to the system, where HostMonitor is running? Webex?

To catch up...

When I close HM5 and re-open it, I get:
"Hostmonitor already as win32 service. Do you need to launch a 2nd instance in application mode"?

You have to click Yes; No will not do anything.

After clicking Yes, I get:

"Cannot activate RCI. Probably port #1054 is in use".

Click OK.

When I launch RCC, there is nothing on the screen except Root. I don't see my servers at all; I don't see an object tree.
