Hafolks,

since few day we experiencing problems with hostmon. It stops working from time to time. The windows service is still running but rcc connection and also webpage service are no longer possible. Restarting hostmon services is solving this issue but latest added tests are gone. And stopping the service takes few mins.
Our environment
- HostMon 10.30
- Server 2012 R2
- 2029 tests
Thanks for any ideas

Best regards
Thorre P

Do you use ODBC logging or ODBC test method? If yes, what ODBC driver do you use?
Do you have installed some antivirus monitors, personal firewall, content monitoring software? Non stanard winsock components?

Any errors in HostMonitor system log file?
Any errors/warnings displayed by Auditing Tool (menu View)?

When problem appears again, could you check resource usage for each process? You may use standard Windows Task Manager to check Handles, GDI and USER objects.
What is the total resource usage on the system? How many handles/threads/GDI objects used by hostmon.exe process?

Regards
Alex

Hi Alex,

thanks for picking up.
Indeed we use ODBC Logging and ODBC test. ODBC logging has alos a problem and throwing error code "ODBC error code: 4294967295 ([Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]String or binary data would be truncated [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The statement has been terminated)"
SQL Driver is 32Bit SQL Server 6.03.9600.17415
Also Oracle is used for additional ODBC test. Here 32bit version OraClient 11g_home1 11.02.00.01 is used.

In log I can't see any misc things. In Audit Log all is green so far.

Just while writing hostmon is stopping again but service is till running. Currently hostmon.exe has 913 threads. In the associated handles section I can't fine hostmon.exe CPU usage is 0,16 % and RAM usage is about 80MB.
Total server ressource usage is about 10% CPU and 20% RAM in general.

That's not normal.

How that's possible? Do you see Handles column but you don't see hostmon.exe process? Then how do you know how many threads running under hostmon.exe process??
May be you did not open Handles column?
May we see task manager screen shot?

Could you try to disable this test?
Oracle software has thousands bugs and lead to various problems.
Oracle client version 11 works much better then version 10 but...
Also you may switch to Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle

Sorry now I got it.
So now I see 1240 handles 6 threads and GDI 196.
When HostMon was running fine I saw only 20-30 handles.
Hostmon service is still running but no logon via rcc etc. possible.
Do you have any further infos for MS ODBC for Oracle?

What exactly error displayed by RCC?

Error from MS SQL server should not lead to crash. Probably you are using too short field for some data (e.g. test name or test reply field)
Oracle - try to disable test or switch to Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle.

What other test methods do you use?

When trying to stop service I get error 1053: Service did not respond to .....Trying again to stop server will do it within few seconds.
Starting the service also takes only few seconds.

About the rcc error I can tell next time when it hungs.

There is no AV FW etc. running on that dedicated HostMon Server.

Other test methods are ping, unc, services, memory, dominant process, NT Event log, etc.

I can change to nvarchar max for testname. Currenlty nvarchar (50) is used for eventtime status and testmethod.

Sorry to ask but how can I upload screenshots? Never did this before

Better send screen shots, logs, config files to support@ks-soft.net (you may click HostMonitor menu Help->Support)
This way you will not show your private information (sometimes this may happen) to everybody.
Actually, 95% of our customers prefer e-mail, not many use this forum.
