|
|
Hello, we have Host Monitor running on a system of ours which is joined to a domain. We have many tests setup for each of our remote systems inside the same domain. What we noticed is service tests cannot retrieve the list of services on a remote system unless the logon account used on the system Host Monitor is running on is in the local administrators group on the remote systems. No matter what other account we use inside the test fails because its not in the remote systems local admin group. We have been testing with local policies and have had no luck. Our concerns are the account Host Monitor is using is in a different domain. By adding this user account to the local admin group on remote systems which are in a different domain causes security concerns. Is there anything else to consider or look at other than using a different logon account that is in the same domain?
Thanks,
Dominic |

Not sure I understand.
You said
... running on a system of ours which is joined to a domain

... our concerns are the account Host Monitor is using is in a different domain
So HostMonitor and target system located in the same domain or different domains?
>No matter what other account we use inside
Do you specify accounts for the test using Connection Manager or test property "connect as"?
HostMonitor version?
HostMonitor started as service? application?
Windows on HostMonitor system? Service Pack?
Windows on target systems? Service Pack?
Regards

Host Monitor and target systems are located in the same child domain. The system Host Monitor runs on is logged in with an account from the parent domain.

Do you specify accounts for the test using Connection Manager or test property "connect as"? Yes, unless the account is in the target systems local admin group, it will not retrieve services for us.
HostMonitor version? 7.46
HostMonitor started as service? application? Application
Windows on HostMonitor system? Service Pack? Windows 2008 Standard x64 SP2
Windows on target systems? Service Pack? Windows 2003 standard/enterprise SP2 32/64bit and Windows 2008R2 standard/enterprise 32/64bit

Have you tried to run HostMonitor using child domain user account? |

Unfortunately no as the system Host Monitor runs on is used for other services and applications that depend on the parent user account to be logged in as. |

Actually HostMonitor version 7 was not designed for Windows 2008, officially you should use HostMonitor version 9 for this OS.
However most functions should work fine...
You may try to install HostMonitor as service and use different account for the service.

Can you provide installation documentation on how to run it as a service or point me in the right direction?
Thanks |

Hi, I have installed v9 Host Monitor as a service in a test lab environment and am getting an error when using the Remote Control Console to modify tests etc. I am getting the following error when trying to connect:
[5/5/2014 1:44:36 PM] Connecting... Ok. TCP Connection established
[5/5/2014 1:44:36 PM] Authentication... Failed. Cannot read data
I have tried disabling windows firewall and many different RCI Port numbers, but no luck. I have verified I am using the correct Host, Login, and Password. I am running the RCC application on the same system as Host Monitor is running on. Any ideas?
Thanks,[/img] |

Connection dropped for some reason.
What do you see on HostMonitor side (menu View -> RCI Status)?
RCI Timeout?

Thanks, I did not have RCC configured in the application so I was not using the correct profile port etc. RCC works like a charm now, but now I am stuck on another issue.
At this point Host Monitor is running as a service and under Tools\Startup\Service I have configured to use a specific account. All of my windows 2000 systems tests such as, ping, service tests etc work fine, but all of my windows 2003/2008 service tests come back as unknown. If I open the unknown service tests I can retrieve the list of services in the test which is strange. |

I think its better to use different topics than one topic for different questions...

Do you mean HostMonitor Options dialog/Startup/Service?
or you are using Windows Services applet?

Have you provided account for connection using Connection Manager or "connect as" test property?

Initially no. I went ahead and added an account using the same credentials as the Host monitor service is using for authentication. I checked the service test option and clicked Ok, but the windows 2003/2008 Service tests are still showing a status of Unknown.

open dialog using HostMonitor GUI? or RCC GUI?
I am using the RCC GUI for all my changes.

Can you provide what permissions the user account needs, that host monitor uses in order to see the services on remote systems? |

PowerUser operator should have enough rights to check list of services.
For other tests you need administrator rights (e.g. CPU Usage, Process tests).
Its better to specify admin account for HostMonitor service and use such account for test items (you may specify one default account or several accounts using Connection Manager).

This means RCC has access to target system.
HostMonitor does not.
Are you running RCC and HostMonitor on different systems?
I assume HostMonitor cannot perform some other tests, like Process test, CPU Usage test?
Could you check security event log on target system?
