Hi Alex!

I'll stress You with new stuff to the "wish list" all the time.. but in the same time make HM a better "tool" for all of us!

Okay now.. here we go: (in this example we're establish HM test for a W2K server).

1). Enter the IP-addr.
2). Enter userid/password for needed credentials.
3). HM do the "job"...

job:
1). Search for local diskdrives - make them!
2). Search for running services - make them!
3). Search for running processes - make them!
and so on...

If we dont need any services, drives, processes etc. - we can delete them!

A template like this will "spare" me for MANY hours!

Cheers,
Hans Mosegaard

We have similar idea. But it will not be implemented in HostMonitor. It will be separate application that will be able scan network and display list of resources. You will be able to mark some/all resources and application will create import file for HostMonitor.

Alex

Very nice idea. It will be great for those that use HM in large networks.

Jromariz.

Alex!

I wont agree with You on this matter...not at all! What's the main reason NOT to implement this template-feature into HM?

Many HM users like me R fighting within large networks, many day-to-day changes and very tricky setup's! Template-features will be a great help within the same application - it all make pretty mutch logic to me! On the other hand.. if You dont put that feature into HM You'll charge add-on license fee from "me" - allthough I allready gave You complete "royalty" since I bought a "life time license".. right?

I can't make You revise your "mind" on this issue, and I wont sound "to mutch negative" after all... but I dont understand your scope?

Cheers,
Hans Mosegaard

Installation package for HostMonitor 4 will include 7 applications (Remote Monitoring Agents Manager, Log Analyzer, Web Service, Telnet Service, etc) + HostMonitor. If we put all this code into one application, it will be monster.

Not exactly. Yes, we can charge different fees for HostMonitor and for add-on licenses. It will make purchase easy for different group of customers (if somebody needs to monitor just 5 servers, he will not pay $250 for full license)
But ALL (even NEW) utilities and applications will be available for you for free (if you have life time license).

>I can't make You revise your "mind" on this issue, and I wont sound "to mutch negative" after all... but I dont understand your scope?

Do you understand it now?

Regards
Alex

What product is this, and is it available already?

Almost two years after stating this, and you now indicate you won't be doing this?

Yes, 2 years. But I didn't say we will not do this at all.
If you check the "what's new" history for these 2 years, you will see a lot of new features.

Some tasks have higher priority, some - lower... Sometimes we can implement new option within 2-3 days after your request, sometimes we need years. If you need some option immediately, the best way is to find product that already have such option.

Alex

We would also like to see some sort of discovery or template features in HostMonitor.

We are doing this manually at the moment - we have templated tests that we copy for our new servers and then have to manually modify for the different characteristics of each server.

HostMonitor is extremely powerful in how far we can go in customising our tests, but this would seriously increase productivity !!!

Andrew

I totaly agree Alex,
This is a great Marketing value added feature for you and a major upgrade for us users.

Click an option [Add New Server Wizzard]
1 - Enter a Server HM or RMA can reach
2 - Enter Credentials

HM would Add the credentials to Connection Manager
HM would probe the server and display tests available for this one as a list preceded with checkboxes
We would press [Select All] and uncheck tests we don't want. and [Create]

HM would ask where the new folder [named "entered Server name"] would be created and AbraCadabra! Done

Am I day dreaming? Hope not Alex...

This would also be the easiest way to reduce the learning curve for HM for new users.

Keep up your "above expectations" work! and happy new year.

- Robert

We plan to implement such toll but it rises many questions, e.g.
Quote:

If HostMonitor detects SNMP agent started on scanned host, it is possible to setup hundreds different SNMP tests.
If HostMonitor finds Windows system, it is possible to create hundreds of WMI and Performance Counter tests.

Alex

Alex,

Obviously autodiscovery can present MANY SNMP and WMI counters, therefore what about this for an idea...

Select the counters you wish to track, then have an additional setting that says 'Set as default' with a further option for 'Default for group'.

ie:

AVAILABLE TESTS
..
..

SET AS DEFAULT for group?
GROUP: xxxxx (Windows, Linux, Cisco, etc... definable)

There could be groups for Linux, Windows, Cisco, etc... then when you discover a device it could either automatically discover the type and apply the default tests for the group it belongs to.

That way you have the power of auto-discovery, without having to keep selecting the tests over and over.

Also it would be nice to be able to add tests to the group, and then have an option to create these new tests for all hosts that belong to that group. You could then for instance add a new test counter for all linux servers in one go.

There would be obviously some issues on things like Network interfaces as the OID can change across machines.. so it might not work correctly for some tests. But standard SNMP OIDs that do not change will work perfectly.

Regards,
Andrew
